Everywhere you look... it's a construction zone!

With the blossoming population in many urban areas, it is
almost a given that when you venture around town to commute
or to perform your errands, you will come across at least
one type of construction project or another. It can be
very frustrating to have to wait in traffic because a lane
or two of traffic may be blocked in order to widen the roads
or make repairs or other improvements. It is hard to think
about the fact that the setbacks now will lead to more
efficient travel and lifestyles in the future. Construction
not only means growth, it also means jobs and an improved
economy. If an area is growing that is a good sign that
the economy it that area is growing as well.
Driving around town can be especially frustrating when there
are construction problems. If you live in a high growth
area with lots of car traffic, road construction can really
snarl up the commute. If this is your situation you need to
try to remain calm and in control of your emotions. Traffic
problems can make an already stressful day seem that much
more so. Don't rush. Just take a deep breath and take it
as slowly and safely as the situation calls for. Plan ahead
if possible to allow yourself extra time. Find alternate
routes that you can take. Speeding or driving erraticly
through a construction zone is not only dangerous, it is
also illegal and you could find yourself slapped with a
fine. There are special laws for construction zones
designed to protect you, the other drivers, and the workers.
In newer residential areas, you will probably see a lot of
housing construction. The vacant lots that may have been
covered with weeds or the old farms and orchards are being
plowed under to make room for new homes, apartments, and
families. This can be dusty, noisy, and inconvenient. Be
patient and remember that at one point the home you live in
was new construction as well.
Commercial construction is yet another area of concern. If
they are building a new shopping center, office building or
factory in the area where you are traveling you need to
take extra precautions. Big equipment like cranes, graders,
and bulldozers take extra room to turn and may also drive
more slowly. Try to move away from them if possible, and if
not just make sure that they know you are there.
We can't stop growth or construction. As long as people
continue to have families, they will need places for those
families to live, shop, work, and go to school. In the end
construction benefits all of us. Not only does it help the
economy, but it also makes life easier and more pleasant.
So the next time that you see a construction site, try to
think about the positives and keep yourself and others safe.
