A man-made structure comprising of floors, walls and a roof
is known as a house. The main purpose of a house is to offer
its inhabitants protection from the environment. A house
offers shelter against cold, heat, wind and rain. It also
protects man against wild animals and intruders. A house is
also referred to as a 'home'. People spend time at home
depending on how many outdoor activities they are involved
in. For example, people who work outside the home may spend
most of their day outside and return home just to sleep.
Domestic animals, commonly cats, dogs and birds are also
kept in some homes. Some people also like to keep very
exotic animals, such as snakes, monkeys and spiders as pets.
No two houses are identical in design. However, certain
features are common to all houses. For instance, all houses
have at least one or more entrance and several windows. A
door or portal could serve as an entrance, and can be made
of different materials and styles. Other parts of the house
can also have different design styles.
There are many types of houses, but they can be grouped into
three main types: detached houses or houses that stand
independently; semi-detached houses that are joined on one
side to another house; and lastly, row houses or terraced
houses (as they are called in Britain). Row houses are
attached to houses on both sides and form a row. Britain
mainly has semi-detached houses while most people in the USA
live in detached houses.
The design, layout and organization of the rooms in a house
is affected by many factors. A typical house design
comprises a dining room, a living room, a kitchen and one or
more bedrooms and bathrooms. Each room is designed keeping
in mind the requirements of the people who are going to live
there. The subject of interior design is taught as a full
university course. Feng shui is a Chinese method of
designing the interiors of a house that is popular today
because it professes to promote harmony and the flow of
positive energy in the home.
If you wish to employ the Feng Shui principles in the design
of your home or office, you need to consider the placement
of some of the elements of the house, specially lighting,
mirrors, walls and furniture. As per Feng Shui, objects that
have sharp angles or corners are judged destructive and are
avoided in interior design. Conversely, certain objects like
green plants and natural light are considered beneficial.
The basic endeavour in Feng Shui is to promote order and
avoid clutter so that the atmosphere of the house can be
peaceful, lively and comfortable.
