Houses and Their Styles
by Jordan Etheridge

Over the years there have been many architectural
designs and styles that have been created based on
the era when it was built and where it was located.
Some styles have come and gone while others are
here to stay and are an inspiration of houses built
today. Some of house styles that are still very
common today are Cape Cod homes, Spanish-
Mediterranean houses, Greek Revival houses,
Tudor houses, and houses in the French style.

Cape Cod houses were first built in the later part of
the seventeenth century and were a tribute to the
style of architecture known as Colonial Revival.
The Cape Cod house is made of wood and has a
roof that is steep and gabled. The popularity of this
house was due to its charming design with a
symmetrical floor plan. In later years the Cape Cod
house was built with a chimney at either end to add
warmth to New England winters.

Spanish-Mediterranean houses are still as popular
today as when they were first built in the 1800~s.
The outside of the Spanish-Mediterranean is usually
stucco, first designed that way to keep the heat out
and the cool in. The most recognizable distinction
of these homes is the low roof that is usually made
of red tile. You~ll find this these styles of houses in
many Southern states, particularly in the state of
California.

The Greek Revival style house is still very popular
due to the boldness of the front of the home. A
large porch will usually run the length of the front
of the house, with huge columns running to the roof
to create a feeling of austerity. The Greek Revival
house was a take off from the Greek homes in
Southern Europe and was first built in the United
States in the city of Philadelphia.

The Tudor house is reminiscent of the houses built
in Britain at the end of Medieval period. The
outside of the house is constructed of wood in dark
colors to resemble beams, with brick on the lower
portion of the home. Most Tudor homes have large
chimneys dominating one room and the upper floors
of the home are fashioned with gables. The Tudor
home is common today in upper class
neighborhoods because of its distinctive Anglophile
architecture.

Still one more house style that is still popular today
is the French style house. Homes that have a
French influence will have a lot of small details that
other house styles don~t have, such as facades made
of blocks that are interlocking, shutters, and
windows that are multi-paned. The inside of these
French style homes are traditional and simple,
featuring a kitchen, living room, and dining room
on the main floor, with bedrooms on the upper
floors.

Modern architects will continue to create house
styles that are a reflection of these times but
traditional styles for homes, such as the ones listed
above, will always be popular among home owners
because of their simplicity and beauty.
